The Catechism of the Catholic Church on hope: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s1c1a7.htm#II

Optimism is a natural virtue, a product of man’s ingenuity, leading to earthly rewards; hope is supernatural, requiring God’s grace, leading to heavenly reward. Faith and charity are treated on the same Catechism page for comparison.

It’s something else.” What is hope and how does it differ from optimism and faith? How do the three virtues of faith, hope and charity work together to perfect us?

Doing God’s will can be performing good works. Good works can therefore be an act of Faith. God calls on us to perform good works as Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing”, John 14:12.

Protestants may not have the completely correct theology or the completely correct Church, but Jesus didn’t seem to quibble over such details. Again, Protestants can be likened to the Samaritans of which Jesus said, “You worship what you do not know”, John 4:22, but nonetheless He engages the Samaritan woman in a conversation and also speaks highly of the Good Samaritan.
